OBJECTIVES

The overall goal of Next-2Digits is to introduce novel, wafer-scale heterogeneous integration technologies of 2D materials (2DM) for the next generation of PICs and OEICs. This goal will be achieved by consistently pursuing the following objectives:

  • To develop a PIC platform sustaining the direct integration of 2DM-enabled PDs and MDs
  • An additive wafer scale integration technology of Graphene onto PICs and OEICs
  • This technology will lay the foundation for the fabrication of 2DM PIC components
  • The performance of the 2DM-based devices will be validated in three use cases at TRL5

IMPACT

The Next-2Digits project aims to achieve significant outcomes in advancing the integration of 2D materials technology and fostering competitive value chains in Europe.
Recognizing the unique properties of graphene and 2D materials, the project focuses on overcoming challenges in wafer-scale integration and scalable production. By reducing production costs, power consumption, and footprint, Next-2Digits seeks to establish integrated fabrication processes accessible to the European industry.
The expected outcomes include:

  • The integration of 2D materials in standard fabrication processes
  • The development of new 2DM-based components with enhanced performance and reduced costs
  • The deployment of these devices in specific use cases to validate their improved performances.
  • The project aligns with the European Union’s recognition of graphene as a Future Emerging Technology, with the potential for significant impact and the creation of competitive value chains.

Collaboration with the Graphene Flagship

Next-2Digits is collaborating with the GrapheneEU project “Europe in the Lead Coordination and Support Action”.

Developed under the scope of the Graphene Flagship Initiative, which is the European Union-funded research and innovation endeavour that aims to bring graphene and related materials from the laboratory to the market, this partnership provides a platform for collaboration, coordination and support for the Graphene Flagship core projects and associated members.

Along with the GrapheneEU, Next-2Digits and 11 other Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs) and Innovation Actions (IAs) projects will contribute to increase the expertise in the graphene field and to spread knowledge among various stakeholders.
